Worcester, Harvey Ball’s hometown, has a big celebration with a hot air balloon and the world’s largest human smiley face.

Also, for those that don’t know, Harvey Ball is the man that invented the yellow smiley face that we see on just about everything nowadays.

Anyway, 2019 is the 20th anniversary of National Smile Day. Here are some ways you can prepare for the 20th anniversary.

Visit Your Dentist

You want to have a smile that looks great on National Smile Day. Businesses all over the world offer discounts and other incentives to people that smile on National Smile Day.

A dentist can make your smile look great in a few different ways.

First, if you have teeth that are not as white as you like, then your dentist can certainly whiten up your teeth and make them beautiful.

Your dentist can also use other techniques to make your smile beautiful. This could involve tooth shaving, which involves cutting parts of your teeth to make them appear straighter.

They could even fix any crooked or missing teeth that you may have. A dentist can fix any tooth problem that you may have that will negatively affect your smile.

Visiting your dentist is obviously important and something that you should once a year. However, there are other things that you can do throughout the year to ensure that your teeth and smile stay healthy.

Brush Your Teeth

The most important thing you can do to keep your teeth healthy is to brush them. Yes, you need to use toothpaste. The toothpaste should be fluoridated too. Natural tooth paste does exist though they aren’t nearly as effective as fluoridated toothpaste.

Anyway, you should brush your teeth at least two or three times per day. Once in the morning, once after lunch, and once before you go to sleep. This will prevent plaque from building up on your teeth, and it will prevent cavities.

Trust us; you don’t want a lot of plaque or cavities on your teeth. It will make them yellow and can lead to cavities.

One more thing, you should spend at least two minutes brushing your teeth. Brushing your teeth for 10 seconds or with too little toothpaste has almost no benefit. You may as well just skip brushing your teeth if you’re only doing it for 10 seconds.

Avoid Sugar

Everyone probably knows that sugary foods and drinks are bad for your teeth; this is because they cause cavities that can absolutely destroy your teeth even if you brush. You should avoid drinking sugary drinks and eating candy as much as possible.

Not only is it bad for your teeth, but it is also unhealthy. Instead of candy, you should focus on eating healthier foods that satisfy your sweet tooth like apples, bananas, and other fruit.

Overall, avoid sugar as much as possible if you want to have a good smile and stay healthy.

Floss Your Teeth

Flossing your teeth is one of the most underrated things that you can do to keep your teeth healthy. In fact, most Americans never floss their teeth.

This is a mistake. Think about when you brush your teeth.

Do you think the bristles on your toothbrush can reach in-between your teeth and remove bits of food?

Of course, the bristles can’t reach there.

Reaching those hard to reach places is the job for floss. Next time you floss your teeth look at how many bits of food you remove from between your teeth.

It will be a lot.

Those bits of food will decay in your mouth and lead to cavities. They may also lead to bad breath.

Please remember to floss your teeth.

Use Mouthwash

Mouthwash is another great thing you should do to improve your smile. You should really use mouthwash after brushing your teeth. It helps eliminate plaque, and it can even remove some of the food stuck between your teeth. It can also prevent your breath from smelling bad.

Now, using mouthwash should not be a replacement for brushing your teeth. Simply use it as a supplement for brushing and flossing.

Avoid Acidic Drinks

We already mentioned avoiding sugary drinks, but acidic drinks are also something that should be avoided. The acid in the drinks will damage your enamel, and this can cause your teeth to turn yellow.

Some examples of acidic drinks include soda and any kind of fruit juice.

You should try to avoid acidic drinks as much as possible. If you drink them, then make sure to brush your teeth that day.

Don’t Use Your Teeth for Other Stuff

This item might sound out of place. Unfortunately, people using their teeth for all kinds of non-eating reasons is extremely common. Some common reasons include opening packages, cracking nuts, opening bottles, and tearing stuff. All of that can result in damaged teeth.

You obviously don’t want a chipped or missing tooth before National Smile Day. Most people probably don’t want a chipped tooth any day of the year to be quite honest.

Anyway, avoid using your teeth for anything that isn’t chewing food. The risk is high that you will damage your teeth, which means you will have to visit the dentist.

As a general rule, most people don’t like going to the dentist for emergency visits.

Final Thoughts

All in all, preparing for National Smile Day is not particularly difficult if you follow the advice listed above. You should go to your dentist too, but following the advice listed above will make your routine dental checkup an easy and painless process.

If you ignore the advice, then your dental appointment may be a painful visit. Please, follow the advice listed every day of the year and not just for National Smile Day. It just makes everything so much easier for you and your dentist.

Relate Posts to Read:
Finding a PPO Dentist Near You

World Smile Day began in 1999 and is celebrated on the first Friday of October of every year.
